Member-only story
Last week, I had the opportunity to mentor three polytechnic students. During the session, I was asked what it takes to excel in a profession.
I shared the following analogy .... a good lawyer knows the law, a very good lawyer applies the law, and an excellent lawyer uses the law.
The distinction is subtle, but significant as it is about how we leverage knowledge to create value. Schools teach us to be "good lawyers," experience teaches us to be "very good lawyers," while talent enables us to be "excellent lawyers."
The good news is that while hard work cannot completely replace talent, hard work can make up for it. So my advice to my mentees is to work hard, seek experience, and focus on creating value if they want to be excellent in their profession.
