1-Minute Insight: Why the government can never convince their naysayers

Organisation policies are derived from management's philosophy. Hence if our philosophies are not aligned, we will definitely disagree on the policies.

In such instances, arguing about the form and substance of the policy is pointless as no policy tweak will ever satisfy the naysayers as the policy intents are at odds.

It is no different when it comes to policies implemented by the G. This is clearly demonstrated in the debate over the MTF's COVID19 response. Here, the G's philosophy is one of collective responsibility (including the unvaxxed), while the philosophy of those advocating for rapid reopening is one of personal responsibility and consequences.

Thus, unless the G changes its philosophy underpinning Singapore's COVID19 response, there will be disagreement on the policies being implemented. As a communicator, I believe it would be more effective for the G to focus on explaining their philosophy and seeking alignment, instead of rebutting policy challenges.

In short, align the philosophies and everything will fall into place.
