An organization CAN have too many talents

1-Minute Insight: The Hard Truth About Performance Rankings

During a recent #CoffeeWithFriends session, the topic of performance ranking pegged to a bell curve was discussed. Many felt that this approach was flawed as organizations always hired the best and, if you hired the best, then a normal distribution was illogical.

The hard truth is that performance rankings will always be relative. This is because they are designed to distribute finite resources (bonuses) with the intent of encouraging performance. As such, performance rankings often have no correlation to the actual talent of the individual.

I shared the story of an ex-colleague who was written off by the organization. She, however, did not let this perception of her diminish her self-worth. She applied for a higher role in another organization, got the role, and is now one of their top talents.

The moral of the story is that talent is relative. So, if a person finds that their talent is not valued in their organization, there is nothing to be upset about. They just need to go to where it will be.
