Best Interview Tip

Thank you for your honesty

I was recently on a job interview panel and, for the first time in a long time, the interviewee was refreshingly totally honest.

No puffery, no exaggeration, and no misinformation. The candidate was candid about her experience and her abilities. And, while she did not check all the boxes, the panel unanimously agreed that she was the candidate for the role.

When I hire, I hire for values and attitude. This is because I believe that with the right attitude competency can be trained and, without values, talent is like fire — a good servant but a bad master.

So the next time you go for a job interview, be honest about the experience you have and what you can and cannot do. Values matter because if I can’t trust you to do the small things right (ie. not exaggerate your abilities during an interview), I definitely cannot trust you to do the big things right.
