Boss, should I change jobs?
As a leader, I am often asked this question and the following is how I always frame my response.
Will change make things better?
Sure! Change certainly has the potential to improve your situation. However, at the same time, change also carries the risk of making your situation worse.
I believe our tendency to think that "the grass is always greener on the other side" distracts us from our personal responsibility. To me, the desire for change is definitely commendable as it signals our discontent with the status quo and our desire for something better. Unfortunately, we seldom consider whether our discontent stems from external circumstances or our own choices and actions.
In situations where external factors are the cause, changing the environment will lead to greener pastures. But, when it is our own actions that contribute to our unhappiness, altering the environment will not address the core issues.
So instead of pursuing change for the sake of change, it is prudent to do some self-reflection. Objectively assess your current circumstances, identify the source of your discontent, then decide if change is the right thing for you. Sometimes, embracing contentment and personal development within your present job can result in a more profound and purposeful life — one where the grass isn’t just greener, but deeply rooted.
