My colleagues recently called me out. When I was asked to rate our use of Gen-AI, I gave us a 2 out of 10. We are beginners! The team was upset. They felt they had fully embraced Gen-AI and integrated it into their daily work hence they are not beginners.
I explained that 21 months ago, I would have rated our use as a 7 or 8 out of 10. Unfortunately, Gen-AI has evolved since then becoming more powerful, while we’ve largely stayed the same. I shared that I see three levels of Gen-AI use:
Level 1 (Basic): Simple queries and routine tasks — writing emails, drafting speeches, or summarizing text. The goal is to save time.
Level 2 (Intermediate): Enhancing content and workflows with more specific guidance — co-creating content, analyzing data, and optimizing for SEO. Here, the focus is on improving efficiency and quality.
Level 3 (Advanced ): Integrating AI into workflows for automation and strategic decision-making — automating processes, generating dynamic reports, or personalizing user experiences. The objective is to innovate and automate at a higher level.
I made it clear that I am proud of what they have accomplished as early adopters. But if they don’t keep pushing the boundaries, sooner rather than later, we will become the laggards.
