Career Transition Advice — Military to Civilian
I once again had the privilege of sharing my career transition experience with senior Singapore Armed Forces officers. This time, I spoke about the three dimensions of hiring — Job Fit, Team Fit, and Individual Fit.
The Three Dimensions of Hiring
While hiring is often seen as a straightforward process of matching a candidate’s skills to a job description and extending an offer, the reality is that successful hiring requires a much deeper evaluation across three key dimensions:
1. Job Fit: Can the Candidate Do the Work? Employers first assess whether a candidate has the necessary skills, experience, and competencies to perform the job effectively. This includes technical expertise, problem-solving ability, critical thinking skills, and prior relevant experience.
2. Team Fit: How Well Will They Work With Others? As no role exists in isolation. Employers consider how well a candidate will integrate into the existing team, evaluating factors such as communication style, work ethic, personality, and cultural alignment. Will they complement the team or disrupt its dynamics?
