Change requires change.
As we pursue change, our old habits, friends, and even structures work to bring us back to the way we were. Change in one aspect of our lives requires us to also make changes to the larger “system” in which we live. Success depends on us removing that which keeps us in our old ways and creating that which will enable our new ways.
As I lost weight, I faced a conundrum — keep the current belt hole and my pants will be too loose; move to the next belt hole and my pants will be too tight. Just as I persevered in my weight management regime — and was able to move to the next belt hole comfortably — if you desire change, you should not allow the comfort of the present to keep you stuck in the past.
Successful sustained change requires us to work simultaneously on the three domains of the personal, the social, and the structural.
