Earlier this morning, I was chatting with a young gentleman who is waiting to start university. As we chatted, he said life is tough and will only get tougher because of next year’s GST increase.
I asked if he did the sums himself, or whether he was simply repeating something he heard.
I said that assuming an annual spending of $20,000, a 1% increase translates into an increase of $200. This is more than off-set by the permanent GST Voucher scheme that gives lower and middle-income Singaporean up to $850 a year.
With finite resources, the government has to be selective about who they help. I know there will be many counter-arguments to this, and they can be valid depending on your perspective. And this is okay! My point to this young Singaporean is not to blindly accept what he hears (both pro and anti-government).
Our future depends on young Singaporeans like him thinking for himself and then deciding what is right and necessary for Singapore.
