RAR files, commonly used for compressing data, and have legitimate purposes. However, cybercriminals have begun to weaponize them. They often disguise malware within these seemingly innocent file formats. Here’s how they do it:
Cybercriminals are now posing as potential customers on Facebook and reaching out to pages with product enquiries. (See pic below)
As the file is masked as being the “screenshot” of the product, unsuspecting business owners will click on the link. Once downloaded, these files will exploit vulnerabilities in your system or device, granting attackers unauthorized access.

- always exercise caution when downloading files from untrusted sources
- only download software or apps from official sources or trusted websites
