Editorial: How Our Elected Government Reflects Our Values — and Why the Close Trump-Harris Race Is a Cause for Concern
In democracies, our elected leaders mirror the values and aspirations of the electorate. When voters cast their votes, they bring with them ideals, priorities, and grievances. They, as such, essentially select not just who will lead but what they believe is worth defending and advancing.
This year’s close race between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump should prompt reflection: what does it reveal about America today?
Donald Trump’s sustained popularity, despite his polarizing and often controversial rhetoric, reflects a persistent undercurrent in society that is difficult to ignore. For many, he embodies dissatisfaction with the establishment, skepticism toward government, and a demand for “America First” policies. Yet, Trump also represents aspects of society many hoped to have left behind—division, unchecked populism, and the glorification of personal gain over collective good.
The very fact that Trump remains a formidable candidate speaks volumes about the current political landscape. Supporters argue he represents a counterpoint to what they see as elitist, disconnected leadership in Washington. However, it’s equally undeniable that his return to the political stage brings with it troubling reminders of values many feel run counter to the best of American ideals: inclusivity, empathy, and a commitment to unity. His track record on issues like truthfulness, racial and gender inclusivity, and respect for democratic institutions raises legitimate concerns about the kind of leadership his return to power would bring.
Kamala Harris, on the other hand, has presented a vision that aligns more closely with progressive and inclusive values. She seeks to champion the rights of marginalized groups, promote global collaboration, and strengthen democratic norms. Yet, her candidacy remains divisive as well, as a segment of the electorate views her progressive policies as veering too far from traditional values or economic concerns. This reflects the ideological tug-of-war happening across America, where both sides feel their way of life, even their values, are under siege.
