Feeling stagnant at work?

It’s nature’s fault

--

If you are feeling stagnant in your career (or in life), you need to recognize that you are in homeostasis and that you need to take conscious action to break out of your comfort zone.

The simple fact is that if we keep doing what we have been doing, we will keep getting what we have always gotten. Success therefore lies outside of our comfort zone. Unfortunately, doing new things, taking up new challenges, or even setting new goals is uncomfortable. And it is this psychological homeostasis that is unconsciously keeping us in our comfort zone, inhibiting our growth, and keeping us stagnant.

If you want success, you need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Here are three things you can do in the next 30 days to get started ….

  1. Interact with strangers. Strike up a conversation with a stranger. Ask them about the work they do and about their perspective on life. This simple exercise not only forces you to confront your inherent discomfort of talking to strangers but, ask the right questions, and you will gain a whole new perspective on life.
  2. Wake up at 5.30am. Having an extra few hours in the morning not only helps you start the day off by being productive, but you also get to see and experience life in a “different” time zone. Walking around your neighborhood before the sun rises opens your eyes to things that you normally miss.
  3. Do one random thing a day. Over time, we settle into routines. It is not only comfortable, but it eliminates our need to think. To start seeing life differently, you need to break out of your routines. Take a different route to work, or eat something different for lunch — embrace the different.

Being uncomfortable is not our natural state. And, in my opinion, it is this human tendency to seek the status quo that limits 98% of the population from achieving success in life and in their careers. So, even as you do these three things for the next 30 days, do pay attention. If you don’t, you will return to a state of psychological homeostasis.
