Forget 2022 ….
“When you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”
What many do during the year-end is to develop a series of new year resolutions (or goals) which they then call their plan for the following year. While this is good, as it is better than not having a plan, I don’t consider this a real plan.
This is because a yearly plan, without a larger plan to guide it, is like driving a car focused only on what is 100 metres ahead of you. Sure, you are moving forward. But without a destination in mind, you are unlikely to get to where you want.
“Without a 5-year plan, you are in essence neglecting the big picture of your life.”
It is extremely easy to get caught up in short-term goals that feel urgent or have quick payoffs but are not important. Taking a longer-term view is definitely more challenging, but more effective as it allows you to build upon each year’s accomplishments.
While 5 years seems long, it is not too long. It is far enough into the future, that it will enable you to set the necessary foundations for you to achieve the significant goals you want in life, but not too long that major changes will disrupt your plans.
So this year-end, before you make your plans for 2022, tap into your imagination. Be bold enough to DREAM about the life you want in 2027, and DARE to make the detailed plans to make that life a reality.
