Gen-AI Is an Enabler, Not a Replacement

First Learn, Then Leverage

Generative AI has quickly become one of the most powerful tools of our time. It can generate reports, write code, summarise articles, design presentations, and more in matters of seconds. Used well, it can supercharge our productivity and amplify our potential.

But let’s be clear: Gen-AI is an enabler, not a replacement.

It should not do the thinking for us. It should amplify our capabilities, not dictate our direction. And, it definitely should not be the reason we skip learning the fundamentals of the work we are responsible for.

You Still Need to Know the Work

To use Gen-AI effectively, we still need to know our work. We still need to understand the problem, the context, the stakeholders, and the desired outcomes. If we don’t, we risk becoming a passive user blindly accepting outputs that might be wrong, shallow, or irrelevant.

This isn’t just about protecting against errors. It’s about retaining our agency. If we don’t understand the work, we can’t guide the AI. We can’t challenge its output. We can’t improve upon it. In short, we are no longer the one in charge.
