Honey, don’t panic.

A lesson in effective communications for married couples

Husband: Honey, don’t panic, but I have some bad news for you. I was hit by a car outside my office. Hailey brought me to the hospital. The doctors are doing tests on me and they are scheduling an MRI. The blow to my head was hard, but the doctors don’t think that there is any serious or lasting injury. I have two broken ribs, a broken arm, a compound fracture in my left left leg, and they think they may need to amputate my right foot.

Wife: Who's Hailey?

Three communication lessons for husbands:

  1. It is not what you say, it is what your wife understands.
  2. Understand how your wife thinks.
  3. Think before you speak. One "wrong" word can derail your entire message.

This is a tongue-in-cheek joke to illustrate the complexity of communications. However, while communication is not easy, here are 7 things you need to know to be a more effective communicator.
