I feel like a fraud when I use ChatGPT

Since the launch of ChatGPT last year, I have been actively pushing the team to leverage Gen AI. Not as an afterthought and definitely not just to check their grammar. I want the team to integrate the use of Gen AI into their work as it is a powerful tool that can help with research, idea and design generation, and strategy formulation. Using Gen AI will save time, reduce errors, and improve quality. Unfortunately, many resist the use of ChatGPT as it feels like cheating and they fear it makes them look lazy.

The truth is, Gen AI does not replace human intelligence — it augments it. Similar to how we would not think twice about using a calculator or spell-checking on our computers, using Gen AI is not cheating and it does not make us appear lazy or incompetent. Just as how calculators have become an indispensable tool for science and engineering — enabling people to perform faster and more accurate calculations, freeing up their time and mental energy for more challenging problems — Gen AI gives us the same benefits.

Thus, as long as we use ChatGPT as a tool to help us with our work and not as a substitute, we are not frauds. We need to rid ourselves of the belief that quality work requires hard work. It does not. With the right tool, we can do quality work working smart.

In short, using ChatGPT does not make us frauds. Not using it makes us foolish.
