If retirement is only about escape, it won’t bring you joy
Don’t Retire Away From Something …. Retire To Something
Lately, I’ve noticed something interesting. When people talk about retirement, many describe it as an escape.
“Can’t wait to quit.”
“Counting down to freedom.”
“Just need to survive a few more years.”
It’s as if retirement is about running away — away from stress, deadlines, bosses, or the monotony of office life. I hear it all the time, even among people who are financially comfortable. They see retirement as the finish line, the point where they finally get to stop doing what they hate.
But here’s the truth. If retirement is only about escape, it won’t bring you joy. Because once you’ve escaped, then what?
The Problem With Retiring Away From Something
When your motivation is to get away — from a job, a boss, a company, or even the sense of burnout — you risk entering a vacuum.
I’ve met retirees who were thrilled during their first few months of freedom. They traveled, played golf, caught up with friends. But then came the quiet. The novelty wore off. Suddenly, they were waking up each morning wondering what to do with the day. The structure that once gave life rhythm — meetings, deadlines, projects — was gone. And in its place? Restlessness.
