It is Time to Redefine Retirement

Retirement is currently seen as a straightforward age-based event where individuals leave the workforce once they hit a certain age, typically 65, and start living their lives. However, with longer lifespans and rising aspirations, retirement has become a more nuanced and complex concept.

The societal norms of having to pay your dues – work now, enjoy later – need to be relooked at. This is because while we now live longer, ageing’s effect on our body’s physical abilities relentlessly marches forward. And, at the age of 65, we will be unable to fully enjoy the just rewards of a lifetime of hard work.

As such, retirement should no longer be viewed as an age-based event. Instead, retirement should be thought of as a phase of life that offers one the freedom to pursue one's interests and passions while we are still able to. If we adopt this definition of retirement, then work (and the salary we receive) is the means to this end and we should be actively working on creating passive…
