I started blogging on Medium to share my thoughts on my passions — Singapore, leadership, public relations, social media, marketing, and personal development. From time to time, I share the same articles on my Facebook and LinkedIn pages, and many friends have told me they enjoy reading my posts, find the content insightful and, in quite a few instances, have made a difference in their lives. I am indeed humbled by such feedback, and it keeps me motivated to continue blogging.
Medium, unfortunately, is a social journalism platform that supports independent writers and they do this via a paywall. In Medium’s business model, non-members get free access to three articles a month. Once a reader exceeds the three free articles, they can’t read more than a few paragraphs of any article after that. Membership to Medium is USD50 yearly. This works out roughly SGD5.65 a month — less than a cup of coffee at Starbucks.
What irks me are friends — who have exceeded their free three articles a month — texting to tell me that they can’t read my articles and asking for me to share them. While I don’t write on Medium for a living, it irritates me that they have an expectation of entitlement.
