Leadership 101: Breaking the Mold

“Breaking the mold” is a metaphorical expression that challenges and seeks to eliminate deeply ingrained beliefs, traditions, or practices considered untouchable or inviolable. The phrase derives from the notion that molds used in manufacturing are rigid and unalterable, thus breaking them symbolizes a departure from the status quo.

“Breaking the mold” requires courage, critical thinking, and a readiness to disrupt established norms. It entails questioning and dismantling long-held assumptions, conventions, or institutions that may have become outdated, inefficient, or harmful.

As leaders, it is incumbent on us to constantly identify, and break, the molds that hold the organization back. This mindset is the difference between being efficient and being effective.

Here are 10 questions you can use to help you break the mold:

  1. Why do we do things this way? This question prompts a critical examination of the rationale behind established practices or beliefs.
  2. What evidence supports this approach? Leaders can ask for empirical data or real-world examples that validate the effectiveness of current practices.
