Member-only story
The great malaise infecting organizations today is paralysis caused by indecision. In a VUCA world where there is a high probability of getting things wrong, leaders are not stepping up and earning their pay. As they fear making mistakes and being penalized for it, they don’t make decisions and pass the buck upwards. The result is either no decision or a slow decision. Neither of which is good for the organization.
I firmly believe that a leader’s value is in making decisions. If a leader is unwilling to make a decision, then the leader is of no use to the organization. And, if an organization does not allow the leader to make decisions, then why hire the leader in the first instance.
As such, as a leader, I work to empower my juniors to make decisions, and I answer for their decisions. The onus is squarely on me to ensure that I train and guide them well enough not to make more than the occasional mistakes.
Decisions are what move organizations forward. Let’s not be that leader that holds the organization back.
