Life Lessons from the Gym
As I reflect on my fitness journey over the past year or so, I have gained three life lessons:
Comfort is the enemy of progress. When I first started, progress was swift. I lost weight and I gained muscle mass. But with that progress came aches and pains. Slowly, over time, my body adapted and I became comfortable with the level of my workout. I stopped pushing myself and while I enjoyed my workouts, progress also stopped.
Don't fear failure. Even as I start to push myself again and lift heavier weights, I experience an unconscious resistance to go for the heavier weights. I find myself thinking what if I can't complete the set? Better to go for the lighter weights and be sure of success.
Habits matter. When I started, it took discipline to go to the gym on alternate days. There was always a reason to skip the gym. But today, it is a habit. If I miss a session I feel uncomfortable and nothing stands in my way of a workout.
Hope these three gym insights help you with your life success.
