I spent the holiday weekend catching up on my reading. Kevin Mitnick’s book ‘The Art of Invisibility’ opened my eyes to how our prioritization of convenience (linking multiple devices and accounts) creates a massive security risk.
Single Point of Failure. Linking multiple accounts creates a single point of failure. If one account is compromised, it provides a gateway for attackers to access other linked accounts. For example, if a hacker gains access to your email account, they may be able to reset passwords for other linked accounts, such as banking or social media accounts.
Data Aggregation. When accounts are linked, they share data and information. This leads to a significant aggregation of personal data. The more comprehensive the profile that can be built about you, the greater the potential impact of a data breach.
Loss of Control. When accounts are linked, users often have less control over their privacy and security settings. Changes made to one account may affect others, and users may find it challenging to manage their preferences across multiple platforms effectively.
