Member-only story
A common sight around Singapore housing estates is the green rubbish bins near lift lobbies for people to throw their litter. Over time, more and more residents have used these bins to throw their household refuse. As the bins overflowed, inconsiderate residents left their refuse on the floor around the bins.
Despite notices for residents to avoid throwing their household refuse at the rubbish bin, and to do so at the nearby bin center, the littering continued.
This situation led to resident complaints about the unsightly presence of litter around the green rubbish bin. To address these complaints, an additional green rubbish bin was added. While one would think this would solve the problem of littering, it did not. More rubbish was found around the green rubbish bins leading to continued resident complaints.
Soon, a larger “commercial” sized rubbish bin was added. While this did not stop the littering completely, there was lesser littering outside the bin. Unfortunately, the problem was still not solved. Now, other residents have complained that having the large rubbish bins is unsightly and the concentration of refuse makes the area smelly.
Some residents have now asked for the bins to be removed completely. And the result is the continued littering in the area where the green rubbish bin used to be.
Every resident has a view and wants their view heard and respected. Can you help me solve the case of the missing green rubbish bin?
