Not just our jobs!
In a recent FB post, a friend shared four AI-generated images and asked me to identify the real from the fake. Even as I studied the photos closely, I could not tell the real from the fake. And this was with me scouring the pics to look for tell-tale signs, much more time than what the average consumer of social media will spend.
To me, this simple test underscores the disruptive impact of Gen AI not only on our jobs, but also on our way of life.
As deep fakes can be used by bad actors to create convincing videos or audio recordings of events that never happened. This manipulation can then be used to spread false information, manipulate public opinion, or damage the reputation of individuals or institutions. As the line between fact and fiction blurs, deep fakes fuel the spread of misinformation and disinformation leading to confusion, polarization, and the amplification of conspiracy theories. Finally, when people cannot trust that what they see or hear is real, trust in media and information sources erodes making it difficult for people to make informed decisions.
