Overheard ….

Yesterday, I was early for a lunch meeting so I decided to sit at the coffee tables in the open area of one-north. Next to me was a table with two young chaps who spoke loudly without a care for who heard them. So, I listened.

The younger of the two told his friend that he had just had a performance review conversation with his boss and that the company had extended his probation period. The boss cited two main reasons — his selectiveness of what work to do, and his tardiness at meetings.

Instead of learning from the feedback (and making behavioral changes so that he can be confirmed), he proceeded to tell his friend that he is indeed selective of doing work assigned to him. He boasted that he graduated top in his cohort and that it was beneath him to take minutes in meetings. Such a role, he continued, should be done by an intern. Not someone of his caliber. He then went on to justify that it was okay for him to be late for meetings. After all, he was always in the office by 8.30am when official office hours are 9am. So, this made up for it.

At that point, it was time for me to head off to my lunch meeting.

I am not sure if this conversation is reflective of the youths in our workforce. If so, I would be very worried.
