“When is the best time to start living the retirement lifestyle you’ve always dreamed of?” This is a question many of us in our 50s ask ourselves. Many will follow the official retirement age of 65 but, by then, it is often too late as they are no longer physically healthy. To determine the “best time” to retire, I think we have to consider the three factors of energy, time, and money. Understanding how these factors intersect in our lifetime will help us make more informed decisions about when to start embracing the retirement lifestyle.

Retirement Lifestyle

Before we go further, I think we need to draw a distinction between retirement and retirement living. To me, the latter is a mindset, and not a destination per se. Hence, one can adopt a retirement lifestyle while still being in full-time employment. According to studies, the following are the top 5 activities people typically engage in during retirement and they reflect retirees’ desire to lead fulfilling, active, and meaningful lives. If you study the list carefully, you will realize that these are activities we can do at any stage of our lives.

1. Travel. Travel is one of the most popular activities for retirees. Many take the opportunity to visit new places, see family and friends, or even live abroad for extended periods. According to the Travel Trends Survey, over 50% of retirees plan to travel more in retirement.
