As the sun sets on our working years and retirement stretches before us, many of us find ourselves reflecting on the concept of time and its true value. For decades, we’ve lived by the mantra “time is money” — a phrase that has guided our decisions to maximize productivity, earn more, and save for the future.

But now, as retirees, it’s time to flip that script.

The truth is, time isn’t money. It is far more valuable. Money, no matter how much we might have, can be earned, saved, and spent. But time? Time is finite. And as we age, time becomes an increasingly rare and precious resource. That’s why one of the greatest lessons is that “we must spend money to buy time, so we can live life on our terms and do the things that truly bring us joy.

Seeing Time Through a New Lens

Think about it. When we were younger, we traded our time to earn money. We worked long hours, sacrificed weekends, and often postponed our dreams for a “someday” in the future. We believed we would have plenty of time later. But now that we’re retired, that “someday” has arrived and we now realize just how fast time has flown.
