Singaporean Matters: Our Flag
As we celebrate National Day, one symbol of pride takes center stage — our national flag. Amidst the celebrations, it is important that we remember that our flag transcends political affiliations and ideologies. Flying the flag is more than a gesture of patriotism and declaration of love and loyalty to our nation, it is the celebration of our shared identity and a commitment to our collective future.
As Singapore moves from being equally poor to unevenly rich, we have become an increasingly diverse society in our aspirations. Differing opinions on governance and politics are inevitable, and they can be divisive. However, at the end of the day, we all want the same thing — a better Singapore.
On National Day, let us unite under our flag.
Flying the flag is not an endorsement of any particular government or policy. Instead, it is an act to pay tribute to the place we call home. The flag symbolizes our collective journey, struggles, and achievements. By flying our flag, we honor the sacrifices of our parents and champion the aspirations of our children.
On this day, let’s set aside our political views and come together as one people. As we gaze upon the red and white, let us pledge ourselves to be one united people, regardless of our race, language or religion; to build a democratic society based on justice and equality; and to achieve happiness, prosperity and progress as one nation.
Happy National Day, Singapore!
