Singaporean Matters: Trouble with neighbors?
Unless we live in the boonies, we all have neighbors. And, in densely populated Singapore, we are all literally less than a stone's throw away from each other.
Living in an HDB apartment, I can attest that having considerate neighbors can be the difference being living in agony or living in bliss. But what can we do if we are unfortunate enough to have an inconsiderate neighbor? Here is a strategy that may help:
Document
While I always encourage people to live and let live, if you have an inconsiderate neighbor, start keeping a record of the incidents or issues that occur with your neighbor. These records should include dates, times, details, and, importantly, proof like photos, videos and recordings. The proof will be useful to substantiate your observations in the event your neighbor doubts that what they are doing has an impact on you and, in the unfortunate event that you need to seek mediation or legal remedies, this proof will form the basis of your complaint.
Communicate
Have an open and honest conversation with your neighbor to express your concerns. More often than not, a neighbor’s “inconsiderate” behavior can be attributed to them not knowing that they…
