I was recently asked what I thought ails society.
I replied, gratitude — our capacity to appreciate what we have, and our willingness to reciprocate kindness.
To me, the root of our struggle to appreciate what we have lies in our tendency to fixate on what we lack, rather than focusing on what have. Unfortunately, in life, there will always be people who have more than us. If we pause and take the time to smell the roses, we will realize that there are also people who have less than us. The reality is that we have much to be grateful for.
Furthermore, our inability to be grateful extends into our unwillingness to reciprocate kindness. This consequently creates a negative spiral where everything is an entitlement and all social interactions are transactions. In such a society, people only do things when there is self-benefit, and this results in a society that lacks empathy.
I firmly believe that the sense of gratitude is the key to alleviating many of the problems that afflict our society today. I, therefore, invite you to transform your life and contribute to building a better society by embracing the mindset of gratitude.
Something to think about.
