“Talent is in the eye of the beholder.”

Like beauty, the perception of talent is subjective. People can, and often do, have differing opinions on who is a talent. What one RO perceives as effective and having potential, another might view as being inept and ordinary.

The hard truth is that performance appraisals will always be subjective as the ability to excel in a VUCA business environment is complex and, as such, impossible to break down into clearly defined matrixes to be measured. Adding to this complexity is that people rely on their own experiences and worldviews to interpret what they see around them. This makes all appraisals inherently biased.

The fact that you are reading this post, means that you are likely not seen as a talent to your RO. There are three lessons you can take away from this:

Lesson One — Become the “talent.”

Forget complaining as it will not change anything. In fact, if you make a fuss, you will only be confirming your RO’s perception of you being a difficult officer. Even as we agree that there are many definitions of talent, what matters in this context is your RO’s definition. So learn his definition and become that talent.

Lesson Two — Find a new Beholder.
