Singapore stands at a critical juncture in our development. Technological advances in AI and robotics, demographic trends, and complex geopolitical forces impact Singapore and Singaporeans. Our continued success, perhaps even survival, is contingent on the partnership between the government and all members of society. In this social compact, the government’s role is to create the conditions for success, while individuals take responsibility for their own lives and contribute to the common good.
To achieve this, we must all embrace three key responsibilities:
Personal Responsibility. Each of us must take responsibility for our own lives and that of our families. We cannot rely on handouts or expect entitlements because resources are finite. We must be self-sufficient and adaptable, and continually reskilling and retooling as needed. We need to take advantage of government programs or pursue further education to enhance our skills and employability. We should explore new opportunities, both individually and collectively, to create wealth and opportunity for ourselves, while planning for our future and our old age.
Social Responsibility. Even as we must enjoy our individual freedoms, but we must also recognize that our actions impact others. We must therefore respect the rights and freedoms of others, while pursuing our own goals. For…
