Passion has no place in a career! I say this because the reality is that passion is fickle while careers are permanent. Hence, while it is ideal that you marry your passion with your occupation, being able to do so is the exception rather than the norm.
Passion is a powerful driving force that inspires creativity, determination, and resilience. It is however notoriously inconsistent. What we are passionate about today may not be the same as what we are passionate about tomorrow. This is because our interests evolve over time and relying solely on passion to guide one’s career choices is risky.
Career success requires long-term commitments, stability and consistency. Being successful in a career demands a certain level of expertise, dedication, and reliability. Frequently switching careers based on fleeting passions will hinder professional growth.
While there are individuals fortunate enough to align their passions with their careers, this is not the reality for most people. Many must make pragmatic choices driven by factors like job availability, financial security, and family responsibilities. To me, passion has no place in a career, and we should find ways cultivate our passions beyond our career by:
- exploring new hobbies and activities
- volunteering and giving back
- pursuing self-development
In short, while passion can be a valuable motivator, it must be tempered with practicality when it comes to building a career. Balancing personal interests with long-term stability is a challenge that many face and understanding that passion is not a reliable compass in the world of work can help individuals make more informed and sustainable career decisions.”
