Very often we come across colleagues who are extremely good at their jobs and whom we believe are capable of holding higher appointments. Unfortunately, their behavior leaves much to be desired and they are consequently passed over for promotion.

I believe that unless we understand the underlying cause of this behavior, and help them understand it, they will never change and that promotion will continue to elude them at best. At worst, they may find themselves out of a job.

1 — How you see yourself

I believe that the trigger is how you see yourself. If you see yourself to be better than your boss, you will then feel entitled to be promoted. In the event you are not promoted, you will begin to feel deprived of what you think you deserve, and this then leads to you feeling resentful of your boss.

2 — What you do

With these feelings, you will then unconsciously (for some of you it will be consciously) try to show that you are better than your boss. During meetings, you will openly challenge your boss’ instructions, criticize your boss’ decisions, and bad-mouth your boss to anyone who will listen. Your intentions to undermine your boss is clear…
