Why Timing is More Important Than Strategy (And Even Talent)

Success depends on you being at the right place at the right time

While I am a strong advocate for individuals to take control of their lives and exercise self-agency, I am also cognizant of the role timing plays in determining outcomes. This is because despite our best efforts and actions, external factors have an outsized influence on the direction of events, and it is therefore often the timing of our actions that make all the difference.

In my experience, timing can either maximize or minimize the potential for success. A well-conceived strategy is undoubtedly essential, but if it is implemented at the wrong time, it will fail to generate the desired results. On the other hand, if the timing is right, even an average strategy can achieve extraordinary results.

A good example is Uber. Uber did not have a revolutionary business model, but it was their timing that enabled them to disrupt the transportation industry. By launching at a time when smartphones were ubiquitous and consumers were seeking more convenient and affordable alternatives to traditional taxis, Uber was able to capture a significant market share in a short period.
