For those that do not know, elephants are kept in place using small ropes tied to stakes. While these elephants can easier break the ropes and escape their confinement because of their size and strength, these elephants have been conditioned to believe that the rope is stronger than they are.

This conditioning began when the elephants were babies, and these ropes were used to tie them in place. Being small, the elephants were not able to physically break free. Unfortunately, even as they grew, and have the strength to break free, their conditioning created a mindset that keeps them compliant and unable to realize their true strength.

The same thing happens in organizations. As part of talent management, organization’s assign CEPs. As CEPs are meant to manage talent flow, there are quotas, and this makes CEPs relative. Thus, if you have been given a “lower” CEP, this is unlikely to be a true reflection of your abilities.

So if you find yourself not going for those key appointments, you need to ask yourself if what’s holding you back real? Or, is it something that you have been conditioned to accept?

Something to think about ….
